Mary Lynn went on a field trip to take students to the scholastic art show at OCC who applied to it. She asked if I wanted to go or stay and I told her I'd stay just because my time was limited and it would help with closing everything out at the same time for the classes. She was glad I stayed because she felt comfortable having me with the classes versus just a sub. She was only gone two periods so it wasn't long. I ran the 5th grade class, which I'd been observing for the past few weeks so it wasn't a problem. They are doing a mentoring photo program with SU students. It's a collaboration with Mary Lynn's husbands class. I basically just told the class what they'd be doing and was there to help out. The kids are already in groups and have mentors so I just oversaw things. Later Mary Lynn said one of the TAs told her I did a nice job.
The 3rd grade class didn't go as well. The kids seem into the Keith Haring lesson and having the trading cards available for kids who got done early was good. Some got to make 3 or 4 so it kept them busy and thinking about the project and gave others a chance to finish up. At the end of class one of the kids tore another student's packet. Then he tore the boys artwork who tore his packet. I took the two of them into the hallway and they just continued blaming one another. I tried to get them to apologize or give one another a chance to listen to the other. I told the one boy who ruined the other boys artwork that it was okay to be upset his packet got ruined but the only place he made a mistake was in doing the same thing back. I told him sometimes in life you just have to take the high road, that when you do that, you aren't the one who ends up looking bad. When you retaliate both parties are in trouble.
Another boy on the way out called told a girl in the class her mother was a stupid black. I didn't hear it but was told this by the girl. I asked the boy and he said he didn't say that. Once their teacher got there I told her and the boy went and hit all the lockers and came back and grabbed Mary Lynn's sign on the front door that her daughter made that said, "The Art Room." He didn't care he did that and just ripped it and crumbled it and threw it into the trash. I'm not sure what his issue was. Mary Lynn later told me about his home environment and how horrible it is.
The two boys who ruined each others work were going to get written up but it seems like it didn't end up happening. Mary Lynn was busy and I'm not really sure how to do that yet. I guess we will talk to them this week about what happened and reiterate that no ruining of art will be tolerated. They also told me they were hitting each other.
