Day 32: Second Day @ Westhill

Tuesday March 13, 2012

First and second period are the larger classes, that have over 20 kids in them. Students are in charge of creating their own assignments in all the 4 Advanced Art classes. There really isn't any beginning of the class instruction or closure. At the end Jeff tells everyone to have a nice day. They know when to get their things and get to work and when to clean up and be ready to go without anything being said to them. Jeff works with them individually to enhance their process and guide them along the way.

The ceramics class Jeff teaches has a similar structure, students get a vague assignment like create something from a slab and then they get to do whatever they want. There were some interesting things being done in the class, and you could see the kids personalities coming through based on what they were making. There is one special needs boy in the class who has a funny sense of humor but does need assistance. His aid is often late.

During free periods the kids like to come into the art room to play timed chess. It's a way of making chess exciting with a timer so the game goes quicker and there is more pressure. I've run into a lot of my old teachers or people who used to work here. I got Final Cut Pro put on a computer for me in the art room so I am going to do my video project idea with the smaller class I'm working with instead of have a large class in the computer lab. The computer lab has imovie which I don't really know how to use. I know final cut pro though and since I'm doing it with a smaller class can easily work in small groups or individually with the kids in that class. Jeff set me up my own desk and got me a new computer set up in the class for me to work on.

I had a championship game last night for my basketball league. After the game we went out to the pub that sponsors us. The guy who works there who sponsors us also works with an acquaintance of ours at Lamar, the billboard company. I was talking to Sonya about how I have to do a unit plan as well as a service learning project at this placement. Most people did one at their first placement but since my placement got interrupted it made more sense for me to just start with the second placement and do both there. I was talking about how neat it would be to have the kids design their own billboard. I was wondering how much that would cost. Sonya said, well why don't you ask Sean, or Cabrina. I also have a teammate Michelle who I'm good friends with that also just got a job there. So we know several people who work there. I didn't even think of that at first. It kind of just fell in my lap given that we were all going to be together that night. I asked Sean the guy who tends the bar at the pub we are sponsored by and he was excited about the idea and said they love community projects and positive messages. He said we could have a space in the Westhill School District, and that we could just pay for the amount it costs to print it, $150. He said the space rental would be free and that he might be able to get the $150 covered but doesn't want to say he can and then have it be a disappointment. I told him that was fine, got his email and  told him I'd get in touch with him more about the details.
