Today there was a budget meeting and no students. It was a professional development day. The district is laying off 15-25 teachers so a lot of the teachers are discussion it. I went to the meeting and took notes and sketched out my ideas for the graphic design lesson and the storyboard lesson. I was struggling with that lesson figuring it all out. It was a challenge and a lot to think about for me to do. Until you figure some things out, you really don't know what you're doing and can't feel confident in it.
I talked to Jamie and discussed how to bind the book. He showed me a children's book he illustrated and bound. He recommended canvas that he had left over so I tried that but did it on the entire book and made it from cardboard but don't like how it turned out. He wanted me to try it just on the hinges but I didn't really get that. Trial and error.
I spent most of the day making copies and figuring out what the lesson for my storyboarding was. Figuring that out meant figuring out how I was also going to carry it through.
Over the weekend, I spent tons of hours with Sonya working on the writing of my storyboard. Just writing 6 pages, beginning with the other pages, redoing everything in a way that flows, actually took a lot of time and was quite a mental challenge. Every time one thing changed, it changed the course of everything else. Change one frame now none of them make sense. It all evolved. I printed out a storyboard and began to write it all out on that and then she helped me with the drawings. Once the rough draft of the drawings were done, I took them to the final paper I was working on and we both colorized them. We work really well together creatively, and typically whatever we do together turns out much better. She just wanted to help me so it helped with all the stress I felt about it.
Even she was getting frustrated with it though when it was coming together. It was mentally difficult. Once it got going though and we were onto the final paper, it really looked amazing! I feel really proud of it!!!!
I did my binding and cover before I did the book though and once I saw how my cover turned out I ended up changing the text to go with that so these are things I realized or learned along the way.
Jeff kind of wanted me to take over the ceramics class but I asked if I could spend some more time learning before then. He was fine with that. I took some clay home though over the weekend and Sonya told me she'd show me how to do some things. The kids are doing coil on Monday but I didn't really feel confident leading that given I know nothing about it. I had an idea though to make a piggy bank with it and see if I could do it. Sonya showed me how to coil. She knows everything about ceramics and is great with sculpture. It's one area I haven't done much artistically. So we sat outside on the deck for about 3-4 hours and both made a piggy bank out of coil. I struggled with some parts of it cracking and having to be so patient with it. Once the pig started becoming a little harder though and began looking like a real piggy bank it ended up making me really happy and I learned a lot and did really well for my first coil! I might try to lead the class and see what Jeff thinks of it.
