Day 34: Day 4 @ Westhill

Thursday March 15, 2012 Blog Post

Today I tried to figure out the schedule of when I'll be doing what at the placement. I am doing liquid latex with one of the classes and since there isn't enough to do it with all the classes was trying to decide what to do with the other classes. I was thinking of a storyboarding lesson with creating a superhero. Jeff kind of thought of making a lesson with aliens so the discussion around it went back and forth a few times and I wasn't 100% on what I was doing yet so it was a work in progress. I wrote out a seating chart of the kids and their names in my notebook so I knew where they sat and could begin learning their names better and take attendance that way. By the end of the day, I committed to doing the alien comic book idea. I had been thinking about working with different comics. Jeff gave me some books to look at that I took home last night to flesh the idea out. I spent a few hours looking through several books to pick out my favorite 6 stills from comics or storyboards or illustrated books with text. I selected 6 diverse images offering different context, characters, stories, expressions, etc. I selected the cover of a book to be the cover we'd work from. The lesson idea I came up with was to create a storyboard from 6 different images, recreating the images with aliens, changing the order of the images to create a story, taking the idea of the characters through the storyline, but text can change. These images I picked out will be a skeleton and the order can change, story can change, and text can change. They are a skeleton to inspire the project, to give a challenge. Take these and recreate the story, make it your own order, own story, and do it with aliens. The final images would be put onto an accordion fold book, that is bound.
