Today was my last day at Ed Smith. Every Friday they have bagels in the teacher's lounge, which I always looked forward to. I got my hard drive back from the woman I designed the flyer for and said goodbye to her. I gave a card to the woman who gave me the song idea for the K class thanking her. She had the kids make me a sign saying that they'd miss me. I got a picture with the sign and them. The boy who cried last time got a chance to finish his piece so that was great to see.
I gave the principal a card thanking her for having me on such short notice and letting her know about the exhibits I set up in the school. I was with a sub the entire day but got to lead the class the entire day which was nice. One boy in 5th grade I think asked me if I was married and I said yes. He looked at me and said, "To who?" I told him I was married to a woman actually. He whispered to everyone and told other kids I was a lesbian. I asked him if he had a problem and was like okay so what move on. I thought it was interesting to see that happen. I don't see my sexual orientation a "platform" as the guy at personnel accused me of, I just see it as something I'm not going to lie about. I am also not going to go into depth with students if I don't find something appropriate I won't say it. But stating whether I am married or not and not allowing someone to assume I'm married to a man because I'm ashamed of myself is really not what I'm going to do. It's like imagine if everyone in the world was gay and people kept accusing you of being gay when you weren't or assumed you were, you might want to clarify that you aren't. That's what it's like.
The kids in the 1st grade class were very excited to get their dust bunnies back. I really had no idea dust bunnies would be such a hit. We went to Mary Lynn's daughter's play and enjoyed it. She was a selective mute growing up yet transforms when she's on stage, quite the ironic combination.
Also, I did a lesson for the 1st grade class to get Mary Lynn started. I read the book, My Many Colored Days. Then I gave the kids stencils to outline at each table in the shapes of dinosaurs, circles, fish, and people. Instead of having them cutting and glueing I just gave them five colors of paper and had them outline at least 3 stencils on each after writing their names on each page. At the end we put the papers in paper clips and pretty much everyone got finished and there wasn't a mess. It was a good way to start it off. You learn these things after trying them out and seeing what doesn't work. It was a better more clear way to start it off. I tried it the other day and did it for the second time today. I also collected all my things and got the class organized.
The 5th grade class had a free period and I had a few of them help me with some new wall hangings for the 1st grade lesson that Mary Lynn would be finishing. It was funny because some of them saw my drawing that was hung up for the K lesson and asked me to draw them a pomeranian dog like I did in my example. One girl asked me and then like four of them asked me with five minutes left. I did a quick sketch but in 5 minutes couldn't do four of them. I told them I'd take it to the copy machine and drop it off to them at lunch. One girl wanted four of them. I made like 12 copies and they took them all. I was like what's the appeal? They said they liked it and wanted to color it. Another girl asked me to draw her strawberries like the ones that were on my drawing so I made her a copy. I didn't get why they liked that so much but it was nice.
